"Never Apologise" collects some his finest essays, including pieces on Chaplin, Welles, and John Ford; England (he was a Scot); Gielgud and Richardson; and most illuminatingly, on himself. His work may not make for comfortable reading, but his wisdom and relevance are undeniable.
